Girls on Hills, who provide women with the opportunity to break free from the road and take their running into the mountains, have organised a weekend course in Grasmere in the Lake District, this spring (11 & 12 May). The company was formed in Glencoe, Scotland, last year, and after unprecedented growth and requests for more courses, they have broadened their portfolio with the support of Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports.
The guided runs this May will be delivered by local and accredited guides with considerable experience of running in the Lakeland fells. Suitable for beginner and intermediate runners, the experience will be tailored to suit the individual's pace and the size of their adventurous streak.
Guides will provide coaching en-route, covering navigation, equipment, training, nutrition and safety for running in the mountains and remote locations. The Girls on Hills team pride themselves on being 'approachable and relatable' and aim to empower women with the confidence and skills necessary to become independent in the mountain environment.
Guide and company director, Keri Wallace, told runABC: “Although our courses are gender-specific, it is not because women need their hand-held or require any kind of ‘special treatment’ when it comes to trail running. Some women just feel more comfortable learning in a women’s only environment. It's that simple.”
