The inaugural Glen Coe Skyline was hailed a success with 148 competitors tackling the highly-anticipated sky running event on Saturday (22 August). Fears that participants would get in the way of hill-walkers and climbers were proved unfounded with many stopping to cheer the athletes as they ran past.
The race was held in near-perfect conditions up until midday when showers started. Joe Symonds, originally from Yorkshire but now living in Glasgow, completed the gruelling course in 7:36:21 to finish as overall winner and fastest male. Fastest female – and overall second-placed runner – was current Skyrunning World and European Champion (ultra distance) Emelie Forsberg in 7:44:19.
Of his achievement, Joe said: “Delighted to win the first ever Glencoe Skyline Race! Incredible route. Thanks to all who made it happen safely. Can't wait til next year.”
Frenchwoman Emelie said afterwards: “Waow! Seriously the best race in this distance. Super technical ridges and gullies (think Trofeo Kima but no via ferret!) some parts very runnable on nice but still tricky trails. Glen Coe I’m thrilled to have run this race. Thanks to your amazing organization. Even though it was hard all of the nature and the course made me go fast. Thanks all of you standing along the course, you made me feel so welcomed here!”
