Despite wintery and difficult underfoot conditions, Steve Vernon secured his fifth title at Northern Cross-Country Championships at Knowsley Safari Park on Saturday (26 January). The Stockport Harrier led his club to victory with a time of 40:01 at the 12k course to finish over a minute ahead of club-mate Pat Martin.
After taking 9th place at the Scottish Inter District Championships earlier this month, Vernon secured top spot in a Stockport Harrier 1-2. A recent tweet suggested that Saturday's winner found the course tough going: "Well done to all that braved Knowsley ... brutal conditions! Massive thanks to the organisers."
Vernon's club-mate Pat Martin took second place in a time of (41:02), while Dan Garbutt of Durham City Harriers & AC continued his impressive form this year with third position (41:24).
In the women's field, Hatti Archer (Hallamshire Harriers) broke the Stockport Harriers stronghold by taking top spot in the 8k course with a time of 30:29. Hatti, who tasted victory at the same event in 2010, finished 15 seconds ahead of Elle Baker (30:44), with 2011 champion Susan Partridge (Leeds City AC) taking third position in 30:57.
