After attracting over 1,000 runners to the event last year, organisers of the Salomon Kielder are expecting increased interest as entries for the 2012 race opened today (Wednesday, February 15). Known as 'Britain's most beautiful marathon,' the third running of the event will take place on Sunday, October 7.
Rarely leaving the shores of Kielder Water, the course follows the Lakeside Way taking runners through the forest and heath land that surrounds the lake. The route is relatively flat with a few challenging inclines, most of which are short and sharp and followed by a long stretch of easy running.
The event received a high degree of media interest after it materialised one runner took the bus for the concluding miles of last year's race and claimed a third-placed finish. After finally admitting to boarding a bus at the 20 mile mark, the culprit Rob Sloan was disqualified and later expelled from his club Sunderland Harriers.
The marathon is part of a weekend of events that include the Kielder Bike Run, Junior Run, and the Kielder 10k. Entries for the 10k, along with the Kielder Marathon are now open and you can register for either race by visiting the event website.
