Striders Set To Contest Tour Of Tameside Club Trophy

Top Manchester running club Hyde Village Striders are set to challenge for the new Tour of Tameside Club Trophy sponsored by runABC. The relatively new club - they were formed in 2002 - boasts a membership of 400 and nine of their number (6 men and 3 ladies) have already signed up for the four-stage contest in June.

Striders' Tony Hillier told runABC: "There's quite a buzz around the club about the Tour of Tameside. We know it's a good test of endurance across different terrain so we're looking to get our training right ahead of the 15 June start date.

"We've pinpointed the Friday/Saturday races as the real challenge. Friday's Hell On The Fell means runners finishing after 8pm with the prospect of being on the start line for the third leg, the half marathon at 10am the following morning. Not much of a window for recovery there!"

Tony, a veteran of the old-style Tour of six races in seven days, was delighted to see the event return in 2015:

"The Tour of Tameside was an iconic event in the 1980s and it's good to see it back in this new format. It's great for the area and I think the new male and female club trophies gives local clubs and those from further afield a chance for some great competition.

"Hyde Village Striders' female team is looking very strong and they're looking forward to competing for the new runABC Tour of Tameside Club Trophy."

The 2017 Tour of Tameside will be run over four days:

  •     X-Trail 10K (Thursday 15 June - 7.15pm);
  •     Hell On The Fell Race (Friday 16 June - 7.15pm);
  •     Hero Half Marathon (Saturday 17 June - 10.00am);
  •     Dr Ron Hyde 7 Mile Race (Sunday 18 June - 9.30am).

A total of 32 miles across a testing mix of road, trail and fell. Enter one or all of the Tour of Tameside races at the Sports Tours International website.
