More than 1250 competitors ensured the success of the inaugural staging of the Wilmslow Festive 10K. Runners from across the region descended on the town to take part in Sunday’s (4 December) festivities, which were organised by Wilmslow-based race promoters, Run North West, whose growing portfolio also includes the popular Run the Alderley Bypass 5-Mile.
The point-to-point course saw the field depart from the centre of Wilmslow and finish at the same location as the popular Waters Wilmslow Half Marathon. Runners embarked on a scenic route that moved out of Wilmslow, along Knutsford Road before looping back round to Burleyhurst Lane and a finish on Sandy Lane.
Attracting elites and fun runners alike, participants were encouraged to get into the Christmas spirit by helping to raise funds and provide gifts for Key 103’s Cash for Kids Appeal, with plenty of fancy dress on show.
A number of fast times at the top suggest that the Wilmslow Festive 10K could be one for a future Christmas PB. Cardiff’s Matt Clowes set the event record in an impressive 29:55, with Liverpool Harriers’ Daniel Cliffe second (30:07) and Matt Bond (30:10) of Sale Harriers a close third.
Faye Fullerton ran a season’s best to lead the women home in 34:27, with Charnwood athlete Jane Potter following closely in 34:31. Liverpool Pembroke and Sefton’s Kirsty Longley rounded off the top trio of female performers in 35:44.
Race director Andrew Whittingham expressed his delight at the race’s immediate impact: “It was a great day of running, with so many impressive performances and a fantastic atmosphere. The combination of encouraging an active lifestyle and supporting good causes gives me a lot of satisfaction after spending long days planning Wilmslow 10K with my team.”
Andrew continued: “We couldn't stage events without the incredible support of over 100 local volunteers mostly from the running community and Wilmslow Hockey Club. A sincere and huge thanks from the team at Run North West.“
