With mild temperatures, rich rural colours, and decidedly fewer tourists than in summer, autumn is an ideal time to visit Italy. And for runners, there’s more than just the cuisine and culture to sample.
Chianti Marathon - 15 October
Chianti Marathon features a mix of roads and non-technical trails. The course is better suited to enjoying the views. As the race is in the middle of wine country, there are plenty of options for post-race refreshments.
Lake Garda Marathon - 15 October
Featuring breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding mountains, Lake Garda Marathon follows the lakefront for almost all of the race. You’ll also be ideally placed for sightseeing in Verona or taking the cable car to the top of Monte Baldo.
Venice Marathon - 22 October
Venice Marathon features one of the flattest courses in Italy and starts in Stra, a small country town about 25km west of Venice. Unlike other major Italian races, the course has relatively few cobblestones.
Florence Marathon - 26 November
Florence Marathon provides a great opportunity to run a marathon before the Italian winter begins in earnest. The course takes runs through narrow streets, passing by Cathedral Square, Piazza della Signoria and the Ponte Vecchio.
