Supermum Jo Pavey is the sole runner on the shortlist for this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year. The 41-year-old captured the imagination of the British public this summer when winning European 10,000m gold and Commonwealth 5000m bronze less than a year after giving birth to her second child.
Her exploits in Zurich and Glasgow supported by husband Gavin, five-year-old son Jacob and 11 month Emily made her into a household name. She became the oldest ever athlete to win European gold as she enjoyed the most successful season of her 17 year international career.
Also on the shortlist are Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, Real Madrid footballer Gareth Bale, British Open golf champion Rory McIlroy and Winter Olympic gold medallist Lizzy Yarnold for the annual awards which take place in Glasgow on Sunday 14 December.
Devon’s Pavey will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow distance running mums Liz McColgan and Paula Radcliffe who won in 1991 and 2002 respectively.
