The final pieces of the jigsaw are coming together as Wigan prepares to host its second ever running festival this Sunday (18 March). Anyone considering competing across the three event – half marathon, 5k and family fun run – will need to be quick though with entries closing midnight this evening (Thursday 15 March).
The event, launched last year following the success of the town’s 10k race, attracted over 4,000 runners across the trio of distances. All three will be started by Jack Johnson, now aged 10, who is the inspiration behind the Joining Jack charity.
As well as giving all half marathon and 5k runners a free pie, Joining Jack, the charity behind the event launched last year, have now teamed up with the town’s two major sporting teams to offer free and discounted tickets to their next home games.
With an FA Cup quarter final game scheduled for the day after the race, organisers have teamed up with Wigan Athletic to offer all runners a £5 discount on tickets – under 11s taking part in the event’s Family Mile can watch the game for free.
A partnership with the town’s all-conquering Super League giants, Wigan Warriors, has also been established, to offer free admission to the club’s next home game after the event simply by showing up with their race medal. “Whether you’re a runner, a football fan, a rugby fan or just fancy taking part for the free pie, we think we’ve got something for everyone,” said organiser Matt Johnson.
Matt continued: “We are so incredibly grateful for everyone’s continued support for the charity, how they keep turning up to our events, and we just wanted to give the something back. We think our event is pretty good value for money already, now the ticket offer from the two clubs is the icing on the cake – or the pie!”
