Marathon: The Patriot’s Day Bombing

Boston Marathon bombingFortunately it is extremely rare that terrorism strikes at a major athletics event, but when it does shock waves reverberate throughout the sporting world. Such was the case after the bombing attack that killed three spectators and maimed hundreds at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon. Now the effects of this callous act are captured in a vivid documentary tonight (Monday, 5 December).

Marathon: The Patriot’s Day Bombing follows Boston attack survivors as they face the challenges of emotional and physical recovery. This year’s historic 120th Boston Marathon was used as a backdrop for the film that stars Mark Wahlberg as a police officer hunting the bombers in the city immediately after the atrocity.

Among the courageous survivors who exemplified the indomitable human spirit was former professional dancer Adrianne Haslet, who ran the 2016 race on a prosthetic leg in 10 hours.  After finishing Adrianne said, “I feel amazing. It’s really emotional because I think of all of the definitions that this finish line has held.”

The documentary screens at 10:10pm tonight on Sky Atlantic and can also be seen on demand through Home Box Office here.

This is certainly one to record, watch and contemplate although there are some distressing scenes that would not be suitable for younger viewers.
