A muddy but undefeated Steve Kenyon won yesterday’s May Hill Massacre (Sunday 5 February). He was first across the line in 1:07:12, more than two minutes ahead of Wayne Mayer of Gloucester AC who finished second in 1:09:52. Luke Gray took third place in 1:11:07.
Claudia Wilesmith of Malvern Joggers won the women’s race in 1:25:52 followed by Judith Oakley of Vegan Runners in 1:27:31. Tina Wickens of Stroud & District AC came third in 1:29:59.
Carol Johnstone was the midpoint runner, finishing in 1:41:31 and 123rd place in a field of 246.
‘Massacre’ is an appropriate word to describe this gruelling 9-mile cross-country race with its muddy trails and steep climbs including the infamous May Hill. Runners were treated to stunning views of the open plain at the top of the hill and attractive scenery in general. However, for many, it was about trying to stay on their feet in the mud.
The race is one of several organised by Trimax Events, based in The Forest of Dean and The Cotswolds. They also stage the Gloucester City Marathon and the Seven Sins Run along with triathlons and donate a large percentage of their race fees to local charities.
Sunday’s race started and finished at the private Huntley Estate near Gloucester. The runners set off at 10am, braving this challenging course with 296m elevation before receiving a ‘Grim Reaper’ style medal on completion.
