Have you ever loved an event so much that you’ve decided to get a tribute permanently inked on your body? Nigel Squair from Elgin certainly has…
His Baxters Loch Ness Marathon debut will forever be etched on his mind…and his arm. Nigel first participated in the event 10 years ago to mark his 40th birthday. He has completed the race on two further occasions since then, and will be making a return visit on September 25 this year to celebrate turning 50.
The tattoo, which shows the laces of a running shoe in the shape of the mysterious Loch Ness Monster, was inked last month as a silver wedding anniversary present from his wife, Yvonne. The design was created over a number of hours by tattoo artist Mike Farquhar of Elgin High Street Tattoo Shop.
Nigel says: “I know it would be more traditional to buy something like a watch, but I already have one so I thought I would get a tattoo to represent something that means a lot to me.
“I really love the event logo as it is so clever and really distinctive. I have the date of 2006 underneath the logo, and my aim is to add to that with the other years that I completed it in 2008, 2015 and – hopefully – 2016.
“It is quite a talking point, and I’m really pleased with how it turned out. Taking part in my first marathon was a milestone, and I’m really glad that I chose the Loch Ness Marathon. I’d heard a lot about it before I signed up – I was really keen to do it and because it is such an iconic event. It represents everything that is great about Scotland and I have really enjoyed all three of my runs there.
“Last year I finished in 4:02 but this year I am looking to beat my best time. The training has been going really well and I feel really strong, so hopefully this will be my year – even though I am now 10 years older.”
