Oulton Runners Fast Out Of The Blocks Once More

It may only have been the fourth edition of the ASICS Oulton Park Half Marathon and 10K but the event, held on the famous Oulton Park motor race track, seems to have forged a distinctive identity on the racing circuit. Despite some gloomy weather, the event drew in a combined field of over 1000 runners, many of whom were able to post quick times due to the speedy course.

The action started at 10am when the start horn sounded for the 10k, which consisted of three laps of the race circuit. Nicholas Hicketts of Stockport Harriers & AC and Sol Clark of Buxton AC battled it out for the men’s title, with Hicketts claiming the win with a five second advantage in 36:07. Gareth Dodd took third in 36:36.

Helen Sahgal was the comprehensive winner in the female field, coming home in 39:06, over three minutes ahead of her closest competitor and a time which placed her sixth overall. Kerrie Harris (42:31) and Sarah Hunter (43:02) were second and third respectively.

The half marathon, meanwhile, which began at 12:30pm, benefited from the later start with the windy conditions beginning to clear. Over 630 runners successfully completed the six-lap course, with Trafford AC’s Tom Charles (1:10:35) coming out top ahead of Callum Rowlinson (1:10:48). Ruth Moran (1:28:11) and Katie McHale (1:34:14) were the top two in the female field.

Reflecting on the day, Simon Hill from organiser Xtra Mile Events commented: “The fourth ASICS Oulton Park Half Marathon and 10K was a huge success and we would like to congratulate every single competitor who crossed the finish line. The atmosphere was fantastic, and it was great to see so many athletes achieve their targets and enjoy a brilliant day of racing at such an iconic venue.

The event is also known to be central to those training for April’s marathon: “A big thank you to our title sponsor ASICS, and we look forward to seeing many participants on the start line of the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon in a few weeks.”
