parkrun Helps Search For Local Leaders

Eddie Izzard

parkrun is working with volunteering charity Join In as it looks to recruit 250 volunteers who will be known as  'Local Leaders'. The charity was created out of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and has comedian and runner Eddie Izzard as its patron.

Seven out of 10 sports clubs says they need more volunteers and Join In’s aim is to increase the number of people who help out at local sports events, which in turn gives more people the chance to get fit and participate in sport nationwide.

Eddie, who took part in his first parkrun at Chelmsford, Essex last year, explains more about the recruitment drive in this YouTube video:

Former 5k World Record holder and three time Olympian Dave Moorcroft, now director of sport at Join In, commented : “Anyone who’s taken part in their local parkrun knows that without volunteers grassroots sport doesn’t exist. In that respect every Olympian owes their career to the time given up by volunteers, and I was no different. The Join In Local Leaders will be vital in helping to expand grassroots sports opportunities in their area and in getting more people active in their local community.”

The role of a Join In Leader is:

  • The public and friendly face of Join In in your local community - a direct line between Join In HQ and the local sports clubs across the UK which need our help.
  • Someone who is able and willing to build and develop a local network, linking Join In to local communities and volunteers in their area to the clubs who need them.
  • Someone who acts as a spokesperson and pulls together activities during Join In’s campaigns to shine a light on the great work done by volunteers in their community.
