Parkrun - the free 5k weekly timed run - is aiming for its highest ever turnout next Saturday (Aug 18) as it teams up with Join in Local to help create the UK's biggest celebration of local sport on the first weekend between the Olympics closing ceremony and the start of the Paralympics. Join In aims to bring the huge enthusiasm for sport from London 2012 back to every community in the UK and parkrun hopes to a play a big part in the celebration with bumper turnouts at over 100 locations across the UK.
There are already 5000 events happening between 13-28 August at sports clubs and community groups, and parkrun will be kicking off Join in weekend with a Super Saturday.
A spokesperson for parkrun said: "The idea is to get as many people running on Saturday 18 August at every single parkrun around the country. So if your friends have been inspired by Mo, Jess or the Brownlees brothers, make sure they join you at your parkrun on the 18th. Don't forget to get them registered on the site first! No country has ever done anything like this before."
Runners in the north of England have over 40 park runs to choose from - 15 in the north-west, 16 in Yorkshire/Humberside and 11 in the north-east. When recommending a friend you should remind them to register online before Saturday. parkrun is free but all the events are well organised and well-marshalled. They are also inclusive, friendly events where runners of all abilities are welcomed. They do however rely on participants to volunteer and will be delighted to hear from you if you'd like to be involved.
