Merseyside foodies will no doubt be excited by the prospect of the first ever Pizza Run tomorrow (Saturday 20 April). In what is set to be the region’s sauciest fun run, the event will see competitors take on a 5k course where they must devour a slice of pizza (crust too!) at the 2.5k & 5k marks.
Taking place at Birkenhead Park, the race has been organised by Wirral Ark, a registered charity that exists to provide accommodation for the homeless, under the MainStay framework, as well as providing support and guidance for individuals to secure permanent long term accommodation.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s event, Pauline Cox of Wirral Ark told runABC North: “Preparations are going well, it’s our first fun run so we weren’t sure what to expect and had hoped to get around 50 registrations but we’re at over 100 now including four dogs!
“Dogs get their own pet tag version of the pizza run medal and we’re hoping that all humans raise a minimum of £25 in sponsorship to help us to continue to provide our services to the homeless in Merseyside."
Pauline continued: “We have local catering company Jakey Jay’s very kindly providing the pizzas free of charge and we have Gregg's vegan sausage rolls as an alternative! There’s a fun fair in the park and other activities going on so it’s looking likely to be a fantastic atmosphere on the day.”
