Whatever the outcome (will Mo do it is the question we’ve all been musing over), Sunday’s Virgin London Marathon will dominate headlines across the running world. Yet there are a number of popular races across the north of the country this weekend; here are just four we’ve picked out.
Sunday will see the up to 750 runners taking part in the Bolton 10K. The event, hosted by Bolton United Harriers & AC, is known for its grandstand start and finish at Leverhulme Park and is one of the longest establishes races in the north west of England. Last year’s event saw Chris Busaileh secure victory in 33:18, with Anthony Valentine second with a time of 33:56.
Looking east, South Shields Harriers will host their annual event, the Sand Dancer 10K. The multi terrain course sees runners move onto the Leas and consists of one large and one small loop on coastal footpaths and is considered in the top scenic coastal runs in the country.
In Warrington, more than 300 competitors are expected to turn out for the Whitley 10K. Organised by the Whitley Village Hall Race Committee, the race takes runners through rural Cheshire country lanes.
This weekend will also see the Buttermere Trail Run 16K, Run Northumberland Cragside 10K (both Saturday) and the first staging of the Fleetwood 10K, Garstang Gallop 10K, and Gisborough Moors 12.5 Mile Fell Race (all three of which are on Sunday).
