Organisers of the Chesterfield and Derbyshire Marathon are inviting anyone who wants to volunteer at the race to put their best foot forward. More than 1,500 people have already signed-up for the event on 14 September, which will be one of Chesterfield’s biggest mass participation events in more than 30 years.
A group of volunteers is being formed to help at the race, primarily in aid of national charity Kids ‘n’ Cancer UK, by doing everything from manning drinks stations to providing first aid. Volunteers will also be selling prize draw tickets, programmes and manning the runner enrolment desks on the day of the marathon. Those volunteering will be given branded clothing, refreshments and food whilst on duty.
Runners taking part have been told to collect their race number in the two days leading up to the event. Official registration for the race will take place at the Casa Hotel in Chesterfield on Friday 12 September between 10am and 9pm and on Saturday 13 September from 10am to 5pm, where runners can pick up their race number with disposable chip time attached.
Mike Hyman, founder of the Chesterfield and Derbyshire Marathon, said: “This is a great opportunity for local people to get involved with a brilliant event in Chesterfield. We are all excited about the marathon. It is going to be a fantastic day for everyone in the community and we hope as many people as possible can be involved with it."
The event features a marathon, half marathon, fun run and relay race, with the main events starting from 8:30am. It promises to be a great event for both runners and spectators, with two dance troupes set to entertain the crowds. After the race there will be a finale in Queens Park with live bands, fairground rides and food tents, along with a firework display in the evening. Anyone interested in entering any of the distances needs to sign up before 31 August, however fun run registrations are open right up until the day of the event.
