In perfect sunny and dry conditions, a record 210 competitors lined up for the start of the Standish Hall Trail Race on Saturday, October 22. The 10k course is demanding with hill climbs, and, as you would expect, plenty of mud. John Morrissey of Wigan Phoenix was first across the finish line in 36:55, with Staffs Moorlands AC's Jason Burgess in second place in 37:16. Peter Mallison of South Cheshire Harriers completed the top trio with a time of 37:55.
Jo Mayland rounded off a great day for Staffs Moorlands AC by winning the female race and taking 28th overall in 43:53, followed by Rachael Moore of Wigan Phoenix (45:08) and Charlotte Wilson of Liverpool Harriers (45:25).
The men's team prize went to Wigan Phoenix 'A' (John Morrissey, Phil Waterworth, Paul Marshall and Karl Tuzio). Southport Waterloo 'A' (Steven Wilkinson, Steve McLean, Rick Bowker and Neil Adshead) were runners-up and Liverpool Harriers 'A' finished in third spot. The ladies' team winners were Southport Waterloo 'A' (Tracey Peters, Carole James and Carol Wright).
Organised by the Wigan Phoenix Running Club, the Standish Hall event is becoming an increasingly popular and challenging hill race that attracts a strong field of competitors. The race is organised biannually, with the next run scheduled for February.
