Running Cubs Wanted In Halifax

runners at the beginners course

Wannabe runners in the Halifax area have the perfect opportunity to get started at the 9 week Stainland Lions course which begins on Monday, April 11. The course is aimed at beginners of every standard, from those who are new to exercise or new to running to those who have run by themselves or friends but want to come and try out a local club or to any other kind of runner who wants to come and enjoy the 9 week training programme.

Course participants will be split into different groups of similar ability so that you won't be holding anyone else back or being held back by others and you will be looked after by the club members.

Organiser Genevieve Thompson told northernrunningguide.com: "For the 2011 course we are planning to add some optional extras to give the beginners a wider ranging introduction to running and what the club itself has to offer. The things we are looking include:
> Track Night - an evening of training at the Athletics Track at Spring Hall, Halifax
> Social Activities - the club has an active social committee who organise various events during the year. Beginners will be invited to join one or more of the social activities that fall during the beginners course
> Away Run - the club has a monthly run from a variety of pub locations around the Calderdale area and finishes with food and drink at the selected pub. Beginners will be invited to join one of these runs during the beginners course. This will be a great opportunity to get to know more of the club members on both a running and social basis.

The 2011 course starts on Monday, April 11 and run for 9 weeks; registration commences at 6pm To avoid the queues that invariably arise on the first night, you can pre-register. All Monday night training sessions start and finish at the Heath Rugby Union Club, West Vale (near the garden centre). Warm-ups will commence at 6:30pm and all runners should expect to be back at the Heath at around 8pm.

The cost for the 9 week course will be £10. If you choose to join Stainland Lions at the end of the course, this will be deducted from the club membership fee of £25.

A previous course participant gives the package a glowing testimonial: "I joined the beginners club last year and I can't believe how soon I felt like part of a family. On the first night I drove down the drive to Heath I was so nervous but as soon as I got out of the car someone came and talked to me and showed me what do. Running with the Stainland Lions has given me the greatest sense of achievement, I can remember the first couple of weeks I couldn't run to Salterhebble roundabout without having 5 stops and then one week I did it one the smile on my face. It is these small achievements which brightened my normally very dull day! Plus I got fit in the process."
