For those of you currently braving the cold and wind to get in winter training, rewarding your efforts with a spring event still seems a while away. Malta Marathon on 22 February, however, is perfectly placed for those looking for a race in sunnier climes.
58 miles south of Sicily, almost bang in the middle of the Mediterranean, the Maltese archipelago comprises three inhabited islands, Malta Gozo and Comino. The event features both a half and full marathon around the historic and beautiful island.
Race entry includes a Malta Marathon T-shirt and an official race magazine including route map. A commemorative medal will be presented to all finishers.
The full marathon starts from outside the bastions of Malta’s old capital Mdina, heads through the main road of Rabat, then continues west before turning north in a loop incorporating the famous town of Mosta. After Mosta, it returns to the main road from Mdina to Valetta, through some of Malta’s urban areas. The route passes by Floriana before reaching the water side and following through Gzira to the finish on the scenic front of Sliema. The half marathon follows most of the marathon route, except for the loop around and about Mosta.
Both the marathon and half marathon routes are predominantly downhill, with the start being at 200 metres above sea level and the finish at sea level.
