A record number of runners descended on Salford Quays to take part in last weekend’s (Sunday 7 September) Club La Santa City of Salford 10K. The race welcomed almost 3,000 runners who took to the streets of Salford, following a scenic route around Salford Quays and MediaCityUK, with Mohammed Abu-Rezeq and Ruth Sinclair taking top spots.
The race started at 10.15am from the plaza area between The Lowry and The Lowry Outlet and headed west on closed roads to Broadway. From there the route turned into MediaCityUK passed the BBC North offices then crossed the bridge into Trafford Park.
New to this year’s event was a prize draw for one lucky runner who won a seven night’s trip to Club La Santa in Lanzarote, the world’s number one active sports and holiday resort, and the official sponsor to this year’s race.
Altrincham and District’s Abu-Rezeq improved upon his second place finish last year to lead the men home in a time of 30:58. Tarus Elly of Salford Harriers following in 31:06 and Sale Harriers’ Gareth Raven in third place (31:43). Chief Executive of Sports Tours International, Chris Bird, commented: “Over the past few years the race has continued to grow to become one of most popular races in the region, and yesterday we welcomed a record number of runners.
“It was a fantastic atmosphere in Salford, the weather couldn’t have been better and it was brilliant to see lots of people in fancy dress and raising money for important causes. Runners of all abilities took part and we would like to thank everyone for making the effort and taking part.”
