Salford Runners Soar Once More

Start of the UKFast City of Salford 10KAlmost 2,700 runners descended on MediaCityUK and Salford Quays on Sunday (4 September) to compete in this year’s UKFast City of Salford 10K. Mohammed Abu-Rezeq now a familiar face on the Sports Tours podium, secured victory in a thrilling contest with Matt Bond.

The race started at 10.15am in dry conditions, with the field departing from the MediaCityUK piazza and following a route around Salford Quays and Trafford Park before crossing the bridge back into MediaCityUK to the finish line. Runners included marathon legend Ron Hill MBE, a team of over 60 runners from Salford City Council and former England rugby league player Adrian Morley.

Abu-Rezeq, who claimed his fifth consecutive victory at the UKFast We Love Manchester 10K in July, edged out Matt Bond to take top place in 30:03, just two seconds ahead of the Sale Harrier. Michael Cayton rounded off the podium positions in third - 31:20.

Salford 10KIn the women’s competition, Trafford AC’s Jacqueline Fairchild crossed the line first in 35:11, with Leeds City AC’s second (35:26) and Rachel Burns third (36:23).

Kevin Harmer of Sports Tours International commented: “Over the past few years the race has continued to grow to become one of most popular races in the region, and on Sunday it was great to see such a fantastic turn out of runners and supporters.

“It was a brilliant atmosphere in Salford, the weather stayed dry and it was great to see so many runners raising money for lots of good causes. People of all ages and abilities took part and we would like to thank everyone for making the effort.”
