It just wouldn’t be Christmas on Merseyside without the festive atmosphere generated by the annual Santa Dash. With Sunday marking the event’s 10th anniversary, organisers are hopeful Liverpool will regain the World Santa title from its current holders in Las Vegas.
Online entries are now closed but interested participants can register at BTR Liverpool’s store at Hatton Garden. Entries will be accepted in the shop until midday on Saturday. BTR staged the very first Liverpool Santa Dash in 2004 with 2,000 entries. It has since grown in size year on year. In 2007, the event was expanded to also include a 1K Mini Dash for youngsters, followed by the introduction of blue Santa suits in 2010.
Last year, Liverpool’s event attracted 10,299 participants, but was narrowly beaten by the Las Vegas Great Santa Run who had an extra 902 Santas. Liverpool last took the honours in 2010, but organisers BTR Liverpool are determined to win it back during the event’s milestone 10th anniversary.
For those taking part, a recent announcement on the BTR Liverpool website provided information about Sunday’s event: 'As you are probably aware by now there will be a new medal collection arrangement in place at the finish of the Santa dash this year. The distance between the finish line and medal collection will be extended by finishing just before the Town Hall with runners walking around the rear of the Town Hall to Water Street.’
‘At Water Street there will be a series of crowd barrier funnels which will identify blue suit or red suit wristband collection lanes. Anyone without a wristband will be required to use the end funnel which will be clearly marked ‘no wristband’. Once you enter the funnel you will need to remove your wristband and hand in to the cadets on duty on the day in return for your medal.’
