Three was the magic number for Stuart Spencer with a win at yesterday's (30 October) Worksop Halloween Half Marathon. The Notts AC runner claimed his third consecutive victory, crossing the finish line in 1:10:05. Joe Sweetnam-Powell of Sheffield Running Club was second in 1:12:35 with Stuart King of Heanor RC coming third in 1:12:45.
Natalie Burns of Lincoln Wellington AC won the women’s race in 1:20:47, nearly five minutes ahead of Rebecca Gallop of Newark AC who was second in 1:25:27. Martha Hanby was third in 1:26:34. Angela Miller of Team Derby Runner was midpoint runner in 1:57:21.
More than 2,400 runners were up to the challenge, set by Worksop Harriers AC who held the race at a new venue this year. Known as the ‘Scenic One’, the half marathon and fun run went through the National Trust’s Clumber Park and Sherwood Forest with their autumn colours providing a stunning backdrop.
The new course was tougher than previous years due to several ‘killer climbs’ that sapped energy levels and the legs! However, the record number of entries this year is proof of the growing popularity of this event that was launched in 1982.
There was a 10am start time for the half marathon followed by 10:15am for the 2.5-mile fun run with runners encouraged to wear Halloween fancy dress for the occasion. Both races started and finished at the Outwood Academy Portland with a themed T-shirt, medal and goody bag for all finishers.
This event raised funds for Autism East Midlands, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and CP Sport.
