The autumn can be the time of amazing flame-coloured hues in the Lake District, and for their final two race days of the season, the Lakeland Trails team have chosen the magnificent scenery around Hevellyn.
Starting with the Glenridding trail race on Saturday 5 November, runners have a choice of a 10k or 15k course. Whichever you choose, you can be assured of the challenges and excitement that the Lakeland Trails series always provides plenty of off-road running across tracks and trails, some easier and some where you have to watch your footing (trail shoes are always recommended); ascents and descents (a quick look at the website provides a profile of the course); a convivial atmosphere with runners supporting each other when they need it; and of course the fantastic Lakeland scenery.
As there is no need for any road closures with these races, the Helvellyn runs start at Jenkins Fields at the sociable times of 10.30, 12.00 and 13.00.
We’ve had such glorious weather this autumn that, if it continues, there should be a great party atmosphere at the finish line. Live music and entertainment will be provided including refreshment tents: but be warned that some years when the wind has been too strong and the weather too wild, these have been limited.
Due to the popularity of these races they are already fully booked: as is the Ullswater Trail race the following day. But for anyone thinking ahead to next year, they should consider the Dirty Double – both races of the weekend! The Ullswater Trail race has been reported here before and starts with a sailing across Ullswater by steamer and an undulating run back around the shores of Ullswater.
If you haven’t yet tried a Lakeland Trail race, visit the event website and take your pick from a series of truly ‘Inspiring Races in Beautiful Places’.
