Sports Tours International are equally effective home or away as their growing portfolio of top North West races is testament. The Manchester-based race organiser now stages events from Liverpool to Tameside and from the Etihad Stadium to Preston and they are always looking for ways to improve the quality of their races.
Now Sports Tours' UK events manager Kevin Harmer is planning to create a dedicated pacers' team to help runners at their Tour of Tameside and We Love Manchester/ Salford/ Preston /Alder Hey 10Ks to achieve their PB goals.
Kevin told runABC North: "We already use pacers at some of our events now we want to extend that so that runners aiming for various times can get the advantage of a paced run. We're currently recruiting for the Pacers team and want to sign up runners who can comfortably and accurately run a pre-determined time at our 10Ks and at our Tour of Tameside races."
One runner who has enjoyed pacing at previous Sports Tours events is Phil Corker. The Cheadle Hulme man paced at all of the events at Tour of Tameside earlier this year and produced four accurately paced runs at the XTrail 10K (59.52), Hell on the Fell (59.50), the Hero Half Marathon (1:59.57) and the Dr Ron Hill 7 (1:00:00) dead.
Phil said: "I became a pacer for the first time last year and enjoy the different discipline involved. For the 'Magic Hour' time for 10k for example I’ve found it as satisfying to see others achieve their goals and personal bests as when I race myself.
"I’m there to support them and run a consistent 10 x 6min kilometres so that they can concentrate on the performance part. If something happens they can still PB if they keep me in sight and I’m pretty vocal to those following. We have a few laughs as I endeavour to keep the mood light and be entertaining and amusing.
Phil continued: "The feedback I get from runners is overwhelmingly marvellous, something money can't buy."
Now Kevin and Phil want YOU to join the fun and help your fellow runners to reach the targets they have set for themselves. Sports Tours are offering free entry into the race you are involved in plus goody bag and race medal. But most of all the attractions is the sense of satisfaction that Phil Corker describes when you support another runner to realise an ambition.
Email Kevin Harmer at Sports Tours International to find out more. The next Sports Tours event is the City of Preston 10K (30 September) and if you fancy being a pacer at that event please contact Kevin.
