Steel Shines At San Silvestre

Gemma SteelGemma Steel capped what has been a highly successful year with victory at the 50th edition of Madrid’s San Silvestre Vallecana on Wednesday (31 December). The performance comes less than three weeks after Steel took first place for Great Britain at the European Cross Country Championships.

The 10k event, which is a certified IAAF Silver Label Road Race, saw Morocco’s Spain-based Malika Asahssah lead the women’s field for the majority. Shortly after the 8k point, however, Steel made a decisive move and commanded the remainder of the race, finishing in 31:52.

Victory at the event means Steel is only the second British woman to win in Madrid, following Paula Radcliffe’s victory in 2005. After the race, the Charnwood athlete commented: “I had been warned of the tough closing couple of kilometres so I decided to save some energy for that final section and it paid off.”

In addition to her successful showing at the European Cross Country Championships, Steel has also taken second place at both the Bupa Great North Run and Bupa Great South Run.
