The Great Run Company today (24 May) announced the launch of a major new marathon running event in Stirling. Stirling Scottish Marathon will be held on 21 May 2017 as the first of the new Great Run British Marathon Series.
The series will also include Birmingham International Marathon and a third event which will be unveiled in the near future.
The Stirling Scottish Marathon route will start west of the city at Blair Drummond Safari Park, before going past historic landmarks Doune Castle and the National Wallace Monument, as well as the picturesque spa town Bridge of Allan. Participants will experience a dramatic finish beneath the ramparts of Stirling Castle. The course will be undulating for the first five miles with the remainder fast and flat.
The launch featured an impressive lineup of big running names, including Liz McColgan, Olympic hopefuls Callum and Derek Hawkins, Freya Ross, and The Great Run Company’s Brendan Foster.
Great Run Company chief executive Mark Hollinshead said: "This is an opportunity to be part of something big – the first marathon in our Great Run British Marathon series. Participants will have the opportunity to run through history on this stunning course and the marathon will provide an opportunity to contribute to the overall quality of marathon running in Britain.”
