Tackling Tokyo

Tokyo Marathon runners

All eyes were on Tokyo last week as the city was awarded the 2020 Olympics, and the focus will again be on the Japanese capital next year as it hosts the Tokyo Marathon on 23 February. The ballot has already closed for the race but Sports Tours International still has places available for runners from the UK.

The marathon takes in some impressive sights including the Imperial Palace, Tokyo Tower and the oldest temple in Tokyo - The Asakusa Kaminarimon Gate (built in 628). A 10km road race is also held on the same day (time limit of 1 hour 30 minutes). As well as big field of numbers the race attracted two million spectators last year, so you can be sure of strong support.

There is also an International Friendship Run on the Saturday before the marathon. The fun run acts as an ideal warm up for the main event and aims to promote cultural exchange between the runners, including traditional Japanese entertainment and shows giving participants the opportunity to experience Japanese hospitality.
