Sports Illustrated’s 2015 Sportsperson of the Year, Serena Williams, was embroiled in a running scandal after reportedly taking a taxi to the finish line of her own 5k. The whole situation, it transpired, was one big misunderstanding.
Taxi For Serena
On Sunday (13 December), the tennis player attended the Serena Williams Live Ultimate Run in Miami Beach, Florida, featuring a 5K, quarter marathon and ultimate kids’ dash. After starting to run the 5k race, Serena then got a taxi to the finish line to assume hosting duties.
In a Facebook video Williams revealed: “I didn’t run the whole way this year, but next year I will.”
Ken Nwadike, marketing director for the event’s official photographer Runner Buzz Media, confirmed these details: “On race morning, it was discussed that Serena would not be running the race this year and instead would serve as a host and announcer while (her sister) Venus ran. At the last minute, she decided to get a jog in to support the runners.”
Serena’s sister and fellow tennis pro Venus Williams finished the 5k in 31:47. The race benefits the Serena Williams Fund, which focuses on 'helping individuals and communities affected by senseless violence, and promoting equal access to education'.
