That A Boy, George

Don GeorgeIn a week that the running community drew inspiration from the incredible run streak completed by Dr. Ron Hill, another close-to-be octogenarian celebrated his very own milestone. Last week, 79-year-old Don George set a very significant achievement at his Great Run Local event at Wythenshawe Park.

Don, a regular runner and volunteer at both Wythenshawe Park and Birchfields Park (with the add cameo appearance at Salford Quays thrown in for good measure) became the second ever person to complete 200 Great Run Local events.

Since taking part in the free, weekly runs, Don has amassed a total time of 70:50:27, including a remarkable 5k PB of 33:55. Don, a member of Sale Harriers and a regular at Warrington parkrun, received a resounding ovation when he hit the 200th milestone last week: “I was quite surprised by the response to my achievement but really appreciated it.

“The events that the fantastic volunteers put on have allowed me to enjoy running over the past few years. I have met so many friendly, helpful and encouraging people it has made it a joy to be a part of Great Run Local.”
