The Great Cumbrian Run Returns in its 35th Year

Runners will once again be taking to the streets of Carlisle and surrounding areas as The Great Cumbrian Run returns for its 35th anniversary this autumn.

The 13.1-mile half marathon, which usually attracts over 1200 runners of all levels and abilities, will take place at 10am on Sunday 1 October 2017 starting from the magnificent Carlisle Castle. Participants will then continue to take in some of the best sites in Carlisle and the surrounding areas, crossing Castle Way and through Carlisle city centre before heading out into the countryside and the picturesque villages of Cumwhinton, Wetheral and Scotby. The final leg will see competitors returning into the city to continue their route behind the castle and on to the grand finish at Bitts Park, where they collect their runner’s medal and T-shirt.

The Family Fun Run will also be back, starting at 9am in Bitts Park. This one-mile route is a fantastic event for all the family and school groups to come along and raise money or as a warmup for Cumbrian Run competitors. Enjoyed by participants and spectators alike, The Great Cumbrian Run continues to grow in popularity each year attracting fun runners and athletes from across the country.

The Great Cumbrian Run and Family Fun Run are organised by GLL, the UK’s largest leisure social enterprise, under their Better brand, with support vehicles provided by Border Motor Group through Carlisle Toyota.  Runners' sponsorship from this year’s event will go to CFM’s Cash For Kids, Eden Valley Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support and the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Entries can be taken online at the Great Cumbrian Run website and you can also download sample running plans and other information about the event. GLL also run over 300 leisure centres across the UK, operated under their ‘Better’ brand where runners can get additional help on getting ready for the big day – find out more about memberships and leisure centres near you at better.org.uk.
