The (Ron) Star Of parkrun

Ronnie Bray

Hot on the Heels of Andy Murray scooping the BBC sports personality of the year, parkrun has announced its very own hero of 2013. The pPOTY (parkrun personality of the year) award was won by Ronnie 'Ronstar' Bray, the organiser of the Temple Newsam event in Leeds.

Ronnie set up the Temple Newsam run in February this year and has seen the 5k become a popular fixture on the parkrun circuit. The event regularly attracts upwards of 120 runners and has a record turnout of 289, which was set of May 25.

After suffering a serious heart attack in the summer, Ronnie was left unconscious for several days. During his road to recovery, Ronnie received messages of support from parkrunners across the globe. Over the last couple of weeks, Ronnie has managed to take part in the event again and has inspired others to join him.

On scooping the prize, Ronnie commented: "Its a huge thank you to everyone and I am buzzing for winning the parkrun personality of the year 2013, I Do really love everyone who gets up on a Saturday morning to come and run with us."

Ron is a real inspiration. The popularity of Temple Newsam parkrun is a testimony to his hard work. I've known Ronnie a couple of years now, he is one of the friendliest guys I know. He encourages everyone regardless of speed and ability and makes running up those flaming hills there an enjoyable experience. Temple Newsam parkrun is, thanks to him, more than a community, its become a little family in its own right!
