Bekoji, a highland town in Ethiopia with a running obsession, will feature in the upcoming documentary, 'The Town of Runners,' The story centres upon the preoccupation the town has with the sport and seeks to explain how it has produced so many profilific distance runners. With a population estimated at around 250,000, Bekoji has produced an inordinate amount of internationally renowned distance athletes, including Derartu Tulu, and the Beijing double Olympic gold winners Tirunesh Dibaba and Kenenisa Bekele.
The feature-length programme also follows the training schedules of two budding athletes competing in national events and aiming to become professional. With British stars Mo Farah and Paula Radcliffe both visiting Kenya for specialist training trips, 'Town of Runners' is an intriguing insight into the world of African training.
