Interest in the 2014 Tokyo marathon has risen dramatically this year with a particular increase in the number of British runners registering for the event. The marathon, awarded major status last year, will have over 35,000 participants in 2014 with around 10% of those being international runners.
Sports travel specialists, Sports Tours International, are overwhelmed by the response they've received from British runners for the 2014 event. They said: "We have been amazed at the popularity of Tokyo Marathon for 2014. We always knew it would be popular, but we did not expect the numbers we are seeing enter this, the newest of the World Marathon Majors. Consequently, we have now sold half of our allocation of guaranteed starting places, but more importantly, we now have very few seats left available with Virgin Atlantic.
"If you want to take advantage of our great value travel package from London Heathrow, we recommend you book your place quickly. 4 star hotel and entry packages are also available and in better supply, should you wish to arrange your own flights."
The race starts in front of the impressive Tokyo Metropolitan Government building and passes through numerous famous sightseeing spots including the Imperial Palace, Tokyo Tower and the world's largest fish market. Runners finish at Tokyo Big Sight Convention Centre. There's a time limit of 6 hours 40 minutes and you must be at least 19 years old to enter. There is also a 10k road race on the same day with time limit of 1 hours 30 minutes.
