Kind-hearted runners in Darlington turned their Monday night festive run into a massive show of support for this year’s Star Radio Toy Appeal. 94 group members decided they would bring along a toy for their weekly meet up, to donate to under-privileged children across County Durham and the north of Yorkshire.
The appeal, which has been running for three years, caught the attention of Dan Rowlands, manager of Up & Running. Dan decided to ask those involved in the Social Run Group, which meets up every Monday evening and is open to everyone, if they would be able to donate a toy to support the appeal.
Members of the group were delighted to be involved and more than 124 toys were donated on the night, with more following the next day. The gesture underlined the sense of community and togetherness the group has fostered, something local mum, Michelle, highlighted when speaking of her son’s involvement: "My son has autism and learning difficulties. He has always liked running but since Dan started the Monday night Up and Running social runs he now loves running and we never miss a Monday.
Up and Running’s Social Run Group meets every Monday at 6pm at Bondgate, it is free and open to runners of all abilities. If you are interested in donating to Star Radio’s Toy Appeal, you can view the drop-off points here.
