It's just three and a half weeks until the North-West's top summer 10K - the UKFast We Love Manchester 10K. 2,000 plus runners will head for the Regional Athletics Track, Sportcity, next to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 8 July to enjoy the event they call 'the people's race'.
Organisers expect large contingents from Sale Harriers, Salford Harriers, Stockport Harriers, Chorlton Runners, Glossopdale Harriers, Mossley AFC Running Club, Hyde Village Striders and dozens of other clubs and groups plus hundreds of charity runners and weekend joggers.
A fast course and a superb finale on the track at Sportcity plus great support on the route are the features that make UKFast We Love Manchester 10K the race that North West runners return to year on year. The fast runners will also be hoping to nail a podium place and collect their prizes from Cllr June Hitchen, Lord Mayor of Manchester. Recent Tour of Tameside hero Mohammad Abu Rezeq (30:50) won the men's race last year while Hannah Jarvis (37:20) finished just ahead of Kirsty Longley (37:26) in the women's race. Kirsty, like Mohammed, recorded a Tour of Tameside grand slam last week.
The We Love Manchester charity will be out in force on the day with volunteers assisting in the baggage room and with medals and goody bags at the finish. The charity's much-loved mascot Bletchley Bee will be at the race and will join runners for selfies and pre and post race support. BB will also be taking part in the Toddle Trot so look out for the trademark black and yellow costume.
Michael D'Ambra is looking forward to race day. Michael works with We Love Manchester charity supporting young Mancunians in education, employment and enterprise. He told runABC North: "I did a 10k race in May and signing up for this race has really helped make sure I continue the training that I started for that race.
"I am on track with my fundraising. I have set up an online fundraising page and have been asking friends, family and colleagues to sponsor me. It is amazing how quickly it starts to add up. I have seen the difference the money raised makes to the people of Manchester first hand through my job and I was keen to do my bit and get a bit fitter at the same time!"
