Wigan Announces Running Festival For 2017

After the success of September’s Wigan 10K, which saw a record 3,100 runners make their way to Market Street, race organisers Joining Jack have added a new event for 2017. In what looks certain to be a big hit with runners across the country, the Run Wigan Festival, scheduled for Sunday 19 March, will feature a half marathon, 5k and family event.

As with the 10k, both races will start and finish at the bottom of Market Street and will boast a route that incorporates many of the town’s popular landmarks. To give the day a festival feel, live entertainment, including music from a host of local bands, has been organised, while spectators (and race finishers) can take advantage of the European food markets.

Matt Johnson, the main organiser of the Wigan 10K, revealed the charity’s thinking behind the decision to launch a second running event: “We just wanted to build on the amazing success of the 10k. We think the people of Wigan and the north west have really taken the event to their hearts and we are hoping this event will create the same incredible atmosphere and attract runners from across the country.”

On the distances available at the event, Matt added: “The 5k race will give runners who perhaps feel the 10k may be a little long for them a chance to get into running and also offer our 10k runners a great fast 5k to include in their training. While the half marathon will give our 10k runners the chance to take the next step.

“We wanted to give runners of all ages the chance to take part and decided that we would like to add a Family Mile. This will be open to runners of any age or fitness level, is only £3 to take part and all finishers will receive a great Joining Jack medal and any adult running with a child under the age of 11 can run for free.”
