As the clocks go back, dark nights descend and the temperature dips, it’s easy to find excuses not to run. But the onset of winter shouldn’t mean you or your trainers have to hibernate.
Indeed, getting out there and running in more challenging conditions can produce some of your most satisfying workouts. But to make the most of your winter running, you must first and foremost, stay safe. Here’s some winter tips…
It’s worth investing in a bright, reliable head torch. There are many torches on the market, but don’t scrimp. A cheap, dim light is a false economy. A good torch will help you see and be seen. Go for one that will last with a super bright light. Some can even be re-charged via USB.
Always, always wear high visibility clothing when running at night. Most runners at some point during their run will have to step onto the road even for just a moment to avoid pedestrians. Make sure traffic can see you.
STICK WITH THE FAMILIAR
Night-time is not the time to explore new routes and go off-piste. Stick with tried and trusted routes where you know the terrain and – most importantly – your way home.
Running to music is one of life’s great joys. But it’s important you stay more aware of your immediate environment in the dark. The darkness ensures visibility is decreased, don’t willingly sacrifice another sense.
It’s better to have too many layers than too few. Wrap up. This is the time of year when you are most vulnerable to colds and viruses. Don’t let flu impinge on your fitness regime. Carrying that little extra weight of clothes can help make your workout even more challenging and make you fitter still.
RUN IN A GROUP
If at all possible, try to avoid running alone. By pre-arranging to meet someone the benefits are two-fold. Firstly, it commits you to the run and secondly, you have immediate help at hand if one of you does stumble or suffer a mishap.
