After the success of this month’s Tour of Merseyside, race organisers BTR Liverpool have turned their attention to Wirral with the borough hosting a trio of events – half marathon, 10k, and Whistle Stop Tour – this autumn.
Sunday 11 September will see the return of the BTR Wirral Half Marathon and Wirral 10K with over 1,000 runners expected to take part in the duo of races. The half marathon has received high praise since its inception in 2013 and scooped the prestigious title of Event of the Year 2015 at the Wirral Tourism Awards in April.
Both races start in Birkenhead Park and follow a path through the Birkenhead Docks to the River Mersey promenade at the Seacombe Ferry and then on to New Brighton.
At the Marine Point retail park, the 10K contingent peel off to finish their race while the half marathon continue along the Wirral coastline as far as the Leasowe Castle Hotel where they loop back and return to the finish line on Coastal Drive. With a point-to-point course, both offer a great opportunity for a PB, and, in addition, have the perfect incentive of some cracking medals for 2016 (pictured).
The 10k and half marathon also marks the final race of the Whistle Stop Tour of Merseyside. The tour comprises three races and begins with the Arrowe Park 5 Miler on Friday 10 September, eight miles through Thurstaston Country Park on Saturday, before coming to a close at the Wirral Half on Sunday.
Entries for the Wirral Half and Wirral 10K are still open, although there are limited places available for the Whistle Stop Tour, so act fast if you want to be a part of this year’s event.
