With the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon just around the corner, York Cityscreen Picture House is looking to get competitors in the mood by putting on a special showing of 'Town of Runners' on Saturday, 19 October (1.30pm). Directed by Jerry Rothwell, the documentary focuses on Bekoji, a highland town in Ethiopia, and its preoccupation with running.
With an estimated population of 250,000, the town has produced an inordinate amount of internationally renowned distance athletes, including Derartu Tulu, and the Beijing double Olympic gold winners Tirunesh Dibaba and Kenenisa Bekele.
The feature-length programme also follows the training schedules of two budding athletes competing in national events and aiming to become professional. With British stars often visiting Kenya for specialist training trips, 'Town of Runners' is an intriguing insight into the world of African training.
